- Story Text: The 211,000-ton tanker Myrtea has been refloated in Singapore after running aground a few miles south of the harbour. The tanker, belonging to Shell Petroleum, was fully loaded at the time and Singapore authorities are now busy dispersing isolated patches of oil from around the harbour beaches.
A Port of Singapore spokesman has said the dispersing operations are likely to last a few days, but it is thought most of the heavy oil patches have already been broken up.
About 20,000 gallons of detergent have been sprayed into the sea so far -- the bulk of this from small boats near the stricken tanker. Officials estimate that at least 1,000 tons of oil escaped from the tanker, which holds more than 200,000 tons of crude oil when fully loaded.
Most of the cleaning-up operations were carried out by workers from the Port of Singapore Authority which had met earlier during the crisis with Ministry of Health officials and representatives of Shell petroleum.
The polluted beaches have now been almost completely cleared and Singapore officials are hoping that the last traces of the oil slicks will have disappeared by the weekend.
