- Story Text: INTRO: An oil tanker was being readied at a Turkish port to carry the first export of Iraqi oil since sanctions were imposed six years ago.
The flow of the first Iraqi oil to world markets for six years was to begin in earnest at the weekend (December 14-15).
Under the United Nations (U.N.) "oil-for-food" deal, a Turkish-flagged tanker docked at the Turkish port of Ceyhan on Saturday (December 14) to begin loading the first export of Iraqi oil via Turkey in six years.
The 150,000-tonne tanker Gole will probably ship the crude oil to the Aliaga refinery in the western city of Izmir.
Aliaga is owned by Turkey's Tupras refiner, which has U.N.
approval to buy 75,000 barrels per day of Iraqi oil.
Former U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali gave the all-clear earlier in the week for oil to begin flowing to the Turkish port of Ceyhan through a 986-km (616-mile) pipeline from the Iraqi oil city of Kirkuk.
Most revenues from the U.N.-approved scheme are to go toward humanitarian aid for Iraqis suffering under economic sanctions imposed after Iraq invaded Kuwait.
Iraq pumped an average 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil through the pipeline before the U.N. embargo imposed after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
The oil-for-food deal does not affect the overall ban on Iraqi oil exports, which cannot be lifted until the U.N. Special Commission says Baghdad has met all weapons requirements under the 1991 Gulf War ceasefire terms.
