- Story Text: Russian authorities have reportedly intensified their efforts in recent days to clear up oil from the Komi tundra region in Ussinsk, following last winter's disastrous spill.
With the coming spring thaw, local authorities and environmentalists fear that the spilled oil will enter the subsoil and destroy the unique tundra flora and fauna.
Greenpeace spokesman Paul Horsman said huge patches of marshy land are covered with oil to a depth of two metres (6.5 feet).
"There's a lot of oil lying in this marshland," he said.
Last year, a corroded pipeline in the Komi region spilled about 100,000 tonnes (98,400 tons) of oil over the tundra -- about three times as much as the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.
Western analysts say the Komi spill has made potential investors in Russia wary. They fear liability for past environmental damage and have shied away from deals that involve developing existing oilfields.
