- Story Text: Jordan's King Hussein held talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday (August 1) on obstacles facing Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and ways of restoring Arab solidarity, Egyptian officials said.
Information Minister Safwat el-Sherif told reporters after the talks that the two leaders discussed efforts to narrow the gap between the Palestinians and Israelis in their negotiations on expanding Palestinian self-rule to the West Bank, already one year behind schedule.
Tuesday's talks also covered bilateral relations and ways of developing economic and political ties, Sherif said.
King Hussein and his wife, Queen Noor, later had lunch with Mubarak and his wife, Suzanne, Sherif added.
Jordanian sources said one of the main purposes of the visit was to congratulate Mubarak on escaping an assassination attempt in Addis Ababa in June.
Hussein's visit followed a trip by Mubarak to Amman earlier this year to ease tensions that had dominated Egyptian-Jordanian relations since the 1990 Gulf crisis.
Egypt was also reported to be upset that it was not forewarned of the surprise peace treaty between Jordan and Israel last year.
Egyptian opposition parties, especially Islamists and leftist groups, have criticised the speed of normalisation of relations between Jordan and Israel before a settlement has been reached with Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinians.
The talks between Mubarak and Hussein were held at a presidential palace on the Mediterranean coast.
Jordanian officials had said the talks would cover the Bosnian conflict and tension between Egypt and Sudan which resurfaced after Cairo sought to link Sudan with the attempt to kill Mubarak.
King Hussein was also expected to brief Mubarak on the recent improvement in Jordanian-Saudi ties, damaged since the Gulf crisis because of Amman's perceived backing for Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, they added.
Both countries have been urging Arabs to unify ranks after the Gulf crisis divided them.
