- Story Text: INTRO: Iraq has begun filling its pipeline with crude oil as it prepares to export limited amounts of oil via Turkey after nearly six years of blockade because of U.N. sanctions.
-------------------------------------------------------------- Under the United Nations deal, Iraq is allowed to sell two billion U.S. dollars worth of oil every six months to buy food and medicine for its population suffering from crippling U.N. trade sanctions.
Iraqi oil exports have been blocked since August 1990 when the U.N. imposed trade sanctions on Baghdad in response to its invasion of Kuwait.
Iraqi oil engineer, Dala Ashour, described on Friday (May 31) how an oil refinery in Karkouk in northern Iraq, would be responsible for the pumping process from Iraq to one of the Turkish ports.
Iraqi Oil Minister Amir Muhammad Rasheed said on Friday that Iraq is optimistic and ready to export oil immediately.
