- Story Text: Faced with the dual problem of an economic crisis and the increased price of oil, the Indian government has been engaged this week in talks with delegations from two oil-rich Middle Eastern countries.
On Monday (25 February) Mr. Ahmed Khalifa Al-Sowaidy, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and his delegation called on Mr. Swaran Singh, the Indian Foreign Minister.
During the four-day visit, Mr. Sowaidy and his colleagues were to meet various economic and financial officials and to finalise arrangements for the supply of oil to India. Later in the day Mr. Sowaidy met the Indian President Mr. V.V. Giri. The visitor on Monday was Dr. Karim Ahmed Al Haremi, the Planning and Development Minister of the Sultanate of Oman, who was visiting at the invitation of the Indian government. Together with other Omani officials he met Mr. D. P. Dhar, Indian Minister for Planning, and Mr. Barue, India's Oil Minister.
Both the UAE and the Omani delegations were to discuss reciprocal trade agreements with India so that the problems created by the oil price increases could be balanced out by the export of Indian goods to the Middle East. Dr. Haremi expressed interest in the purchase of a wide variety of industrial goods from India, such as equipment for power generation, transport and agriculture, as well co-operation in the development of services such as hospitals and agricultural expansion.
