- Story Text: Work on the twelve and a half million pound extension to Kenya's Mombasa Oil Refinery is in its final stages. It is due to be completed by May next year, and in operation by the 1st of July. The construction work has been going on for the past three years, and a large part of the cost is being provided by the British Government under its Export Credit Guarantee Scheme.
As many as 700 people have been employed on the project, which included improved crude oil discharge and fuel oil loading facilities, and ten new storage tanks. The expansion is expected to increase the capacity of the Mombasa Refinery from 2.5 million tons a year, to 4 million tons a year. The refinery first came into operation in 1963, and supplies the bulk of the petroleum requirements of Kenya, Uganda, Northern Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and the Off-shore Islands.
