- Story Text: The Iraqi Oil Minister Amer Mohammed has said Iraq has
curtailed exports of oil under the U.N.food-for-oil
programme.
Rasheed made the comments as Venezuelan Oil Minister Ali
Rodriguez arrived in Baghdad for a two-day visit to discuss
bilateral oil cooperation and other oil-related issues.
The Venezuelan minister was received at Baghdad's
al-Rashid Hotel by Iraqi Oil Minister Amer Mohammed Rashid on
Monday (November 22) after travelling by road from the
Iran-Iraq border point of Al-Muntheriya.The two ministers are
also expected to discuss issues related to the Organization of
Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC cooperation in
devising ways to support oil prices.
Other high-ranking officials from the two countries will
attend the meetings. The ministers are expected to tackle the
crucial question of whether current OPEC output cuts should be
altered.Last March OPEC countries and key allies agreed to
cut their production by 2.1 billion barrels a day to help
raise oil prices.
The pact expires on March 31, 2000.Rodriguez said he
carried a letter from his president to Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein regarding an invitation to attend OPEC's summit in
Caracas,Venezuela, in March.
Also on Monday, Rashid reiterated Iraq's rejection of a
two-week extension of U.N.humanitarian aid after the Saturday
expiration of the latest phase of the oil-for-food deal.
However, it was unclear whether Iraq will stop exporting oil
to raise money for food under the extension, which aims to
give Security Council members time to resolve a deadlock on a
wider, comprehensive policy on Iraq.
Baghdad has called for the lifting of U.N.economic
sanctions imposed in 1990 following its invasion of Kuwait.
