- Story Text: About 23,000 Belgian students, protesting against plans to merge colleges of further education, blocked traffic in Brussels on Tuesday (October 18), police said.
Police did not intervene in the demonstration even after they were pelted with eggs and oranges, eyewitnesses said.
The Education Minister of the French-speaking region of Wallonia in southern Belgium, Michel Lebrun, plans to cut the number of further education colleges in the region to about 25 from 113 and transform financing for the region's universities.
There are more than 56,000 students attending a higher education in the French-speaking part of Belgium.
The students were demonstrating against the "Lebrun Plan".
The demonstration organisers, "La Federation des Etudiant Francophones (FEF) (Federation of French-speaking students) hailed the demonstration as a success.
One woman student expressed anger that Lebrun had not come out to talk to the students.
The students marched in the inner city of Brussels, towards the offices of the Ministry of Education, forming human chains.
The protest dispersed peacefully after six hours.
