- Story Text: Saboteurs set crude oil pipeline on fire in northern
Iraq.
A set of three pipelines carrying crude oil and
derivatives from Iraq's northern oil fields to the capital
city of Baghdad was on fire after being hit by
rocket-propelled grenades on Wednesday night (April 21, 2004),
witnesses said
The hit section, located near Thurthar area, 15
kilometres south of Samarra, some 100 kilometres northwest
of Baghdad, is part of a main pipe linking the northern oil
hub of Kirkuk with Daura refinery in Baghdad.
Witnesses said the pipelines carry oil, natural gas and
benzine from Beiji and Kirkuk fields to Doura refinery in
Baghdad,
Sabotages on Iraq's oil system have been rampant
following the downfall of Saddam Hussein's regime in April.
Pipelines in northern Iraq have been plagued by blasts
and fires, forcing the resumed oil export to Turkey to a
complete halt, and making chances for a quick reopening a
hopeless task.
