- Story Text: A forest fire in a mountainous region of Turkey has
continued to rage but firefighters said the blaze, close to a
NATO fuel oil filling establishment, could soon be brought
under control due to high winds in the area.
The forest fire which started on Wednesday afternoon
(July 24), 15 kilometres from the Mediterranean city of
Antalya continued to spread towards the West due to heavy
wind.
"If it was as windy as this morning then it would be much
harder for us but it still would not be a disaster," Antalya
fire brigade president Mehmet Sener told Reuters.
Firefighters doused the flames with water as plumes of
smoke could could be seen from a nearby road. One C-130 plane,
2 helicopters, 20 sprinklers with 60 firemen were present at
the place to help extinguishing work.
Sener said he was confident the blaze was under control and
added that several precautions had been taken to extinguish
the fire.
The fire spread close to a NATO fuel oil filling
establishment and local citizens said they were relieved by
the reassurances given by the local fire department.
According to authorities, 20 hectares of forest were said
to be reduced to ashes and several hectares of field said to
be destroyed.
The Forest Ministry said it had warned authorities to take
precautions against the high temperatures and that wind might
cause fires in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions.
