- Story Text: Saboteurs blow up oil well near the oil-rich Iraqi
city of Kirkuk.
Saboteurs struck at an oil well near the northern
region of Kirkuk on Sunday (November 21), and the flames
continued to rage hours after it was set ablaze.
It was the latest in a series of attacks against Iraq's
oil installations.
Four oil wells, about 30 kilometres west of Kirkuk,
were on fire last week. It was not clear how long they had
been burning and witnesses said that insurgents detonated
four bombs near oil wells in Al-Khabbaza oil field.
An Iraqi oil official, who declined to be named, said
it would take more than three months to repair damage to
the wells and pumping station at the Khabbaz field near
Kirkuk.
The official said that the flows through Iraq's
northern oil export pipeline are expected to remain at no
more than 200,000 barrels per day for three months while
fires at five sabotaged wells are put out.
Saboteurs have mounted relentless attacks on Iraqi oil
facilities, including pipelines and wells, since the Iraq
war last year.
The north produces 700,000 bpd out of Iraq's output of
2.6 million bpd.
