- Story Text: Insurgents clashed with Iraqi police and U.S.
soldiers in the northeastern town of Buhriz as oil fires
burned and a mortar attack in Baghdad kills six.
Insurgents clashed with Iraqi police and U.S.
soldiers in the northeastern town of Buhriz (60 km north
east Baghdad) on Monday (November 15, 2004). The gunmen stormed
the police station using machine guns and rocket-propelled
grenades, police said. A gunbattle ensued and four police
cars were burned, police added.
Reuters video footage shows masked gunmen firing
rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and cars on fire.
"We destroyed five cars of the Iraqi National Guards
and police, those collaborators, we will take revenge of
them (Iraqi forces)," one of the gunmen told Reuters.
Saboteurs blew up a section of an oil pipeline near
the northern region of Kirkuk on Monday, while flames raged
in four oil wells after a string of bombings the previous
day witnesses said.
An oil pipeline carrying oil to refineries in the city
of Baiji was bombed at around 3:00 am about 60 kilometres
(37 miles) west of Iraq's major oil producing city of
Kirkuk.
Meanwhile four oil wells, about 30 km west of Kirkuk
were on fire. It was not clear how long they had been
burning. Witnesses said that insurgents detonated four
bombs near oil wells in Al-Khabbaza oil field on Sunday
(November 14). The north produces 700,000 bpd (barrels per
day) out of Iraq's output of 2.6 million bpd. Officials said last
week that the line was pumping at
about 500,000 barrels per day but officials at Iraq's
Northern Oil Company would not comment on pumping rates on
Monday.
Near Baiji insurgents set fire to a storage tank at an
oil pumping station along Iraq's main export pipeline to
Turkey witnesses said.
Saboteurs have mounted relentless attacks on Iraqi oil
facilities, including pipelines and wells, since the Iraq
war last year.
In southern Baghdad six Iraqis were killed and several
wounded in mortars attack on Monday. Women and children
among those killed witnesses said.
"Until now we have six killed and some of the wounded
are in a serious condition so the number may well
increase," Doura resident Ibrahim Hamadi said.
The attack that destroyed several cars happened Monday
morning in the Doura neighbourhood of Iraq. Insurgents have
regularly used mortars to attack U.S. and Iraqi security
forces bases.
