- Story Text: U.S. B-52H bomber has landed on Russian soil for the
first time at an air show.
A U.S. B-52H bomber has landed on Russian soil for
the first time, on the second day of Russia's sixth
international air show.
The arrival of the USAF (United States Air Force) B-52H
bomber on Wednesday (August 20) further boosted an already
large presence at this year's show at Zhukovsky airfield
where the Soviet Union once tested its military aircraft
under tightest security.
U.S. pilots that flew the plane for 13 hours said that
having B-52 at the Moscow air show was of great importance
for both countries.
"Well, it was built in 1961. Of course, it was part of
the Cold War, so back in 1980's it was a big deal for us.
But now we're on friendlier terms and this is a great
invitation for us to bring B-52 here to Moscow. I believe
this is the first time that B-52 has been to the Moscow air
show. So, I think its pretty much big a deal for both side,
both the U.S and Russia," said Lieutenant-Colonel Bill
Patraude, who flew the plane from North Dakota.
Both Russian and U.S pilots toasted each other with
vodka and caviar on the successful flight of the B-52 to
Moscow.
Visitors at the show were able to see a F-15 and F-16
parked directly opposite their former Cold War foes, the
MIGs.
About 57 percent of Russia's arms sales on world
markets come from fighter jets including the Su-30, with
China and India the main clients.
If arms exports continue at their present pace, Russia
could match or even beat its 2002 record of 4.8 billion
U.S. dollars worth of arms sold through Rosoboronexport,
the state-owned company that is the principal outlet for
Russian arms onto world markets.
