- Story Text: Residents of Wadowice carry soil from places
familiar to Pope John Paul II to place in his grave.
Soil from places familiar to Pope John Paul II
travelled from his home town Wadowice, 50 km (31 miles)
west of Krakow, to Rome on Tuesday (April 5, 2005) to be
laid in his grave.
Residents of the small town left on buses with a
pilgrimage to bid farewell to their countryman.
"It is an old Polish tradition that when a family
member dies abroad you take the soil from his birthplace to
his grave. Knowing that the Pope will be buried in Rome, we
are taking this soil from his hometown" said the mayor of
Wadowice, Ewa Filipiak.
Thousands of Poles boarded buses, trains and planes for
Rome on Tuesday (April 5) for the funeral of their
compatriot Pope John Paul, while many more flocked to the
Polish capital for a huge memorial mass.
Hundreds of thousands of Poles are expected to make it
to Friday's (April 8) funeral, which may draw two million
people from around the globe.
Poles are observing six days of national mourning for
the Pope, who guided them spiritually for a quarter of a
century.
Millions more will attend masses throughout the country
on Friday (April 8), when all state institutions and major
businesses will shut down.
