Saboteurs blew up an oil storage tank in the
northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk on Sunday (December 5),
with the flames continuing to rage hours after it was set
on fire.
The attack was the latest in a string of sabotage
against Iraq's oil installations.
Witnesses said attackers blew up a pipeline that runs
inside an underground oil storage tank, 80 km southwest of
Kirkuk, and that set the storage ablaze.
They said the attack took place early Sunday (December
5) morning, around 0230 (2330 GMT December 4).
Columns of thick black smoke and raging flames could
be seen coming from the oil storage. The Ministry of Oil
did not offer any comment on the pipeline or the storage
tank.
Repeated attacks on Iraq's oil infrastructure,
especially in the north, have played havoc with the
country's crude exports.
Shipments of Iraq's northern Kirkuk crude from Turkey
are expected to remain at no more than 200,000 bpd (barrels
per day) for three months.
Iraq's south oil exports were running at a reduced
rate of one million barrels per day (bpd) for a second day
on Wednesday (December 1) while repairs continued on a
pipeline feeding the country's key Gulf terminal.
Kirkuk, located 200 km (125 miles) north of Baghdad,
has been the scene of frequent outbreaks of violence.
Insurgents have regularly targeted the region's rich
oil reserves, blowing up pipelines carrying oil from Kirkuk
to nearby refineries.
