- Story Text: Saboteurs attack the main pipeline linking Iraq's
northern and southern oil fields but exports were not affected.
A section of the so-called Strategic Pipeline was on
fire 30 km (19 miles) west of Babylon, a local government
official said on Wednesday (August 25).
The pipeline was attacked despite statements from
officials that "extreme measures" were in place to protect
the country's oil infrastructure as a Shi'ite uprising led
by anti-U.S. cleric Moqtada al-Sadr raged.
The reversible line, already in need of massive
repairs, was designed to transport Basra Light crude to the
north or output from the Kirkuk oil fields to the south. It
does not extend to the country's two offshore Gulf
terminals.
