- Story Text: Fire breaks out on oil pipeline in Northern Iraq.
Firefighters worked to stem a fire which broke out
on an oil pipeline in Northern Iraq on Thursday (September
18). The pipeline near Baiji is one of several 20-inch
lines from the Kirkuk oilfields that, according to one
firefighter, feeds the main export line to Turkey.
Iraqi police were on the scene eight kilometres from
Baiji to investigate whether or not the fire was another in
a series of sabotage attacks that have hampered post-war
Iraqi oil sales.
The commander of the firefight unit of the Northern Oil
Company said it was impossible to secure the area:
"You see this open area, we don't know. There is no
security here. Also the policemen, they do their efforts,
but you see, it's a large distance. A huge amount of
distance. So many kilometres. They cannot cover such a
situation."
Iraq's northern Kirkuk exports have remained close
since the war. The U.S. military said this week it hoped to
see the line reopened by about mid-October.
Baghdad has relied on deliveries from its southern
fields for vital export revenues to help finance post-war
rebuilding efforts.
The northern pipeline runs southeast from the Kirkuk
oilfields to the Baiji refinery before pumping northwest
across the Turkish border to the Ceyhan export terminal on
the Mediterranean.
