- Story Text: Brunei's crude oil can now be exported directly to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Hongkong, Taiwan and the West following the opening of a new terminal at Seria earlier this week.
Brunei has been exporting crude oil for over 40 years, but because of financial difficulties it was piped to neighbouring Sarawak for tanker transport to the rest of Asia.
Sultan Sir Hassanal Bolkiah, who performed the opening ceremony last Tuesday (6 June), called for further investment in his country's economy from both local and foreign companies.
The new oil terminal, spread over some 12 acres of ground, will enable Brunei to cope with an increased production. Sarawak's pipeline connection has become overloaded in recent years.
Financed by Shell Petroleum, the terminal is one of the most modern in the world. A central control point will be used to monitor the flow of oil to a single buoy marring about six miles offshore, Tankers from Asia and the Western hemisphere will call at regular intervals and oil officials emphasise that the new loading procedures being employed by the terminal will enable the industry to grow even faster than in recent years.
