Japanese troops arrived in Indonesia on Sunday

world war to offer relief and reconstruction assistance to

tens of thousands of people and left even more homeless.
Two C-130 aircraft landed at the airport in Banda Aceh
carrying relief supplies and 20 Self Defence Force
personnel (SDF) who will set up a camp for the some 1,000
troops due to arrive in the coming weeks.
The main task of the troops will be to provide medical
assistance and to prevent the spread of disease by
improving sanitation in areas throughout the destroyed city
and surrounding areas.
"A medical team has come with and we hope to be able to
be of assistance to the Indonesian people as soon as
possible. We (who have come here today) will prepare for
the arrival of the main body of troops so that they will be
able to carry out their medical activities and also disease
prevention measures as smoothly," said Takeishi Moriichi,
supervisor of the SDF's mission in Banda Aceh.
"The situation has changed since the advance team
researched the situation but we will do whatever we can
with the means that we have brought with us," he added.
