- Story Text: The giant Dutch oil tanker Metula, grounded in the Magellan Straits since 9 August, was re-floated on Wednesday (25 September).
The 320 metre (1,050 feet) tanker was pulled off the rocky bottom of the Straits by 6 tugs, and later berthed at San Felipe Bay, Chile.
The Mutula ran aground in the Straits while carrying some 190,000 tons of crude oil from the Middle East to the Chilean port of Quintero, near Valparaiso.
An estimated 25,000 tons of oil spewed out into the Atlantic from the damaged ship, forming a huge slick. This is serious threat to the abundant wildlife of this remote area and many penguins and other seabirds have suffered and died with their features coated in sticky black oil.
Before she was re-floated the remainder of the Mutula's cargo was transferred to another tanker to make the job of pulling her off the rocks easier.
