- Story Text: Israel and the Palestinians hope to announce a
formal end to more than four years of bloodshed at a summit
in Egypt on Tuesday.
Preparations were underway on Monday (February 7, 2005)
for a crucial summit meeting between Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas on Tuesday (February 8).
The peace talks, to be joined by Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's King Abdullah, would aim to
solidify a shaky ceasefire by setting in motion a peace
process based on a U.S.-backed "road map" to a Palestinian
state.
In the West Bank on Monday U.S. Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice held talks with Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas pledging Washington's support for his efforts
to end anti-Israeli violence and institute reforms.
On her first visit to the Middle East since taking up
her post last month, Rice proposed to Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon on Sunday a "security mechanism" that
she indicated would involve the United States monitoring a
ceasefire accord.
The meeting in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh
will mark a dramatic return to efforts to get a U.S.-backed
peace "road map" back on track. The plan charts mutual
steps towards establishment of a Palestinian state
alongside a secure Israel.
As expected security will be tight at Sharm El Sheikh
airport and the Jolie Golf Resort where the summit will
take place.
