- Story Text: Insurgents target oil facilities in Iraq setting
pipelines on fire.
Saboteurs blew up two domestic Iraqi oil pipelines
on Friday (December 17), the latest in a series of attacks
that have crippled refineries and created a shortage of
gasoline and other fuels.
Witnesses said an explosion ripped through a section
of a pipeline running near the Doura refinery on the edge
of Baghdad and a second explosion damaged a pipeline near
the oil centre of Baiji in the north.
Attacks against Iraq's oil facilities in central and
northern Iraq have risen sharply after U.S. forces attacked
the Sunni Muslim city of Falluja near Baghdad last month.
Iraq's main export pipeline to the Mediterranean port
was also hit last week, disrupting flows and reducing
storage levels at Turkey's Ceyhan port.
Exports of crude oil from the mainly Shi'ite south,
which is relatively secure, have remained steady at around
1.4 million barrels per day.
