That is the one measure on the supply side. We know, that on the demand side especially, the global economic situation is actually favourable. The increased demand is being caused by the USA, who are building up extensive stockpiles, which has consequences on the price formation and spot markets in Rotterdam. The issue will naturally play a role at the meeting of Group of Eight leaders next week in the United States, it has to play a role, because such a high oil price has negative impact on a fortunately flourishing global economy, and therefore on the German economy." 2.08 (W5) GRAPHICS (JUNE 3, 2004) (REUTERS) 10. - Story Text: Europeans are hoping the price of petrol will go
down as OPEC oil ministers meet in Beirut to discuss oil output increase.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on
Thursday (June 3, 2004) he expected OPEC to increase oil output
sending prices down.
"We expect that OPEC will raise its output quota, in
a way that will have positive impact on the oil price",
Schroeder said on the sidelines of an international energy
conference Renewables 2004 in Bonn.
"The issue will naturally play a role at the meeting
of Group of Eight leaders next week in the United States,
it has to play a role, because such a high oil price has
negative impact on a fortunately flourishing global
economy, and therefore on the German economy," Schroeder
said.
Ministers from the Organisation of the Petroleum
Exporting Countries met in Beirut on Thursday to discuss
raising crude output quotas.
Leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) major industrial
nations will meet at a summit in Sea Island, Georgia
between June 8 and 10.
Oil prices have surged to around $40 (dollars) a barrel
this year amid worries about maintaining supply in the face
of growing security risks in the Middle East and surging
demand in boom regions such as China.
The surge, fuelled last weekend by deadly attacks in
the Saudi oil city of Khobar, has sparked fears that a
revival in the world economy risks being snuffed out by
high fuel prices.
In the meantime motorists all over Europe complained
about petrol prices.
Members of the German public have begun taking measures
to use less petrol, such as using public transport.
"What are you supposed to do? You can't run a car
without petrol. But you can reduce using it, so I try to
use the train as much as possible or walk," said one
customer who was filling her car with petrol at a Hamburg
petrol pump.
"I try to get used to filling the petrol tank on the
days when it is cheaper, what can you do, that's the way it
is," said another customer.
In the UK where petrol prices have been among the
highest for a long time, a litre of petrol was selling well
above the pound, pressing even the most loyal customers to
think twice before filling up their petrol tanks.
"I live so close that I have an account here and it is
slightly easier to put up with whatever prices they charge
than going somewhere else. But I must say even I'm tempted
to move after fourteen years because when a litre is over a
pound one starts thinking maybe there are better ways of
doing things," said one motorist in London's affluent
Chelsea district.
The price of petrol in Italy has largely stayed the
same despite the fluctuation of costs abroad and concerns
about
political instability abroad. However, Italians are keeping
up to speed with developments in the hope the price for
unleaded petrol will be brought down from the current 1.16
per litre.
"A rise in the price is unjustified as always. For us
(the salesmen) we have our margins on the litre so the more
it rises the less we earn - its not good for us or our
clients," said petrol pump assistant Fabrizio Pinzi.
