- Story Text: An explosion has ignited an oil pipeline near the northern
city of Beiji.
An explosion on Wednesday (December 10) damaged and set alight a
pipeline linking the Beiji refinery in northern Iraq with the al-Doura refinery
near Baghdad.
The explosion halted pumping on the pipeline, but it was not clear how
it would affect Iraq's oil production, which has suffered badly from
attacks in recent months.
Iraq has the world's second largest proven oil reserves, but is
currently importing petrol because the oil sector has not returned to full
capacity after the war earlier this year to remove Saddam Hussein.
U.S. officials said earlier that the attacks on Iraqs oil
installations are becoming better organised and more concerted,
particularly in the northern
oil fields.
