- Story Text: Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said on Thursday afternoon (September 2) that production from a burning oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut.
All 13 crew members were rescued with no injuries from the ocean near the burning platform and were taken to another offshore platform -- in the the region's first major offshore incident since BP's oil spill began in April.
Jindal said senior executives from the platform and field operator Mariner Energy told Louisiana officials the flow of oil from the sea floor to the platform had been stopped. The fire seen on the platform was from flammable material in storage on the platform.
"Mariner Energy says that they have the production, they have shut in the production platform. If that is true, that is a very important step," Jindal said at a news conference from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
U.S. Coast Guard officials told Jindal they were prepared to use dispersants if an underwater oil spill should develop from the Mariner platform located about 90 miles (145 km) south of Louisiana's Vermilion Bay. There were no plans to use dispersants at the present time, he said.
A 1-nautical-mile long oil sheen had been reported to the Coast Guard, Jindal said.
Mariner officials also told Jindal the fire was nearly out. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
