- Story Text: Most of oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico is gone, and the oil that remains poses a threat far less damaging than originally anticipated, the chief White House environment advisor said on Wednesday (August 4.
"The vast majority of the oil is gone. It was cleaned up. It was burned. It was skimmed. It was contained. Mother nature did its part; really is good news," White House environment advisor Carol Browner said on a morning talk show.
The New York Times reported that an assessment from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was expected to declare that what is left of the oil is so diluted it does not seem to pose much additional environmental risk.
Most of the oil at the surface appears as a light sheen, and federal scientists believe the oil beneath the surface is dispersing rapidly, the Times reported.
Browner's comments came as BP announced it was carrying out the "static kill" procedure, the first of two steps to cap the well permanently. BP engineers on Wednesday were pumping heavy drilling mud into the well. When that task is completed, they will seal the well with cement. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
