- Story Text: The Turkish foreign ministry on Saturday (June 18) organised a media tour of Boynuyogun camp where scores of Syrians have found refuge after fleeing their
homes to escape a military crackdown by Syrian authorities.
The refugees were trying to adjust to life in the camps as children played in a makeshift playground on the site.
The Turkish authorities had previously barred media from entering the camps. One reason given was the protection of refugees from being filmed or
photographed, as this could pose a danger to them or their families in Syria.
So far, some 9,600 Syrians have crossed into Turkey. Up to 10,000 more have taken shelter in a village 20 metres on the other side of the border.
The main Syrian activist group organising protests said on Sunday the crackdown has killed 1,300 civilians.
Up to 10,000 people have been detained since the crackdown by forces loyal to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad began in mid-March. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
