- Story Text: Opposition party candidates out electioneering in the streets of Yangon urge residents to make their vote count.
Opposition parties in Myanmar's first election in 20 years were out campaigning on Friday (November 5) two days ahead of parliamentary elections.
Myat Nyar Na Soe, running for the National Democratic Force Party (NDF), a splinter group of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD), hailed passer's by as party voulunteers handed out leaflets.
Soe, who says the opposition does not have much chance of winning, nevertheless feels it is important that people vote.
"This is a hastened democracy, so we must go through this election so people's political knowledge will get more and more mature, so that in the end they will choose the democratic parties," he said.
The military regime, lead by it's Union Solidarity and Developement Party, is expected to dominate the polls, but observers are focussed on whether a handful of weak and divided opposition groups will a significant amount of seats.
The country's main opposition group, Suu Kyi's NLD, was disbanded by the government earlier this year and is pushing for a boycott. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
