- Story Text: As part of the promotion for their upcoming movie "The Campaign," Hollywood funnymen Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis took part in an event at the Newseum in the nation's capitol on Tuesday (July 31).
The duo, who spoke to reporters before the screening of their film, bantered about politics to promote their latest politically charged comedy.
"Well, I mean hopefully the movie is kind of a nice departure from the continual bombardment of this campaign. And the people kind of have a laugh and learn a little bit about how messed up our political system is," Ferrell said.
Ferrell, who honed his political chops playing President George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live, talked about why he chose the role and who he drew inspiration from.
"You know this wasn't a script that was handed to us, it was an idea we helped create and so we jumped at the chance to have some fun with politics. It's about time and you know in terms of my character who is a four time incumbent Congressman you know I basically drew upon everyone on Capitol Hill whose is not doing anything -- which is a lot, lot of people," Ferrell said.
Galifianakis and Ferrell play opposing political wannabes, rival North Carolina congressional candidates, out to bury each with mud-slinging and back-stabbing, in the summer comedy that takes today's political circus to the next level.
The two stars poked fun at their political affiliations.
"In real life I am a Independent, Green, Demo-Repub," Ferrell said.
"I am an Ethiopian," Galifianakis replied.
