- Story Text: Cambodian political parties started campaigning on Thursday (June 27) ahead of the general election, with eight political parties taking part.
Thousands of supporters for the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) waved flags, while others danced on campaign trucks at the start of the party's election campaign. June 27th also marked the 62nd anniversary since the founding of the party at Koh Pich island.
One senior CPP member explained why he thought people should vote for them.
"You vote for the CPP to continue development, vote for the CPP like voting for yourself, vote for the CPP is to bring the current Prime Minister Hun Sen to power again," senior CPP member Ith Samheng said.
Cambodian newspaper, The Cambodian Daily, reported that Hun Sen has repeatedly warned of a return to war if his ruling CPP loses the July 28 election.
At the freedom park, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) told supporters regardless of who wins the election, there will not be a war.
"No war. The international community spent a lot of money to bring about the Paris Peace agreement in 1991 so they would not support you to start the war. Whoever starts the war, that person will be brought to prison quickly," CNRP senior member and lawmaker Yim Sowan said.
Eight parties are contesting for the 123 seats in the House of Representatives.
The general election will be held on July 28th. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
