- Story Text: Oscar-winning Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella is returning to the big screen this summer with a soccer-themed animated film, "Metegol."
The movie - based on a story by Argentine author Roberto Fontanarrosa - surrounds Amadeo, a young foosball star looking to win over a girl named Laura with the help of foosball table players who come to life. Foosball is a table-top version of soccer.
Campanella, whose Argentine film "The Secret in Their Eyes" won the foreign-language-film Oscar in 2010, said the film's animation largely stacks up to big international movie companies.
"With respect to the international, well, we can compare technically now, nothing more, no? Based on what we know of the movie, from people from other countries who have seen the movie, the big companies like Dreamworks or Pixar and in the technology and the human (input) we are at an international level. Over there we lack a little rendering capacity, which is something very technical that I am not going to be able to explain here, that's to say, number of computers. That we lack a little in order to be able to do scenes that luckily this movie didn't need, but like large bodies of water, for example, that type of thing," he said Thursday at a press screening of the new film.
The film features some other stars, including the voices of Argentine actors Pablo Rago, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, Fabian Gianola, Horacio Fontova and Diego Ramos. The Puerto Rican band Calle 13 composed an original song for the film.
The film is slated to debut July 18 in Argentina, in December in Spain, with releases planned in other international markets.
"The movie not only needs to be worldwide, but it has to go well worldwide. It's a gamble. It's the first time, I think, that anyone has made an Argentine movie knowing that in Argentina - even if everyone in the country sees it twice - you won't recover (the roughly $20 million invested), so it's a gamble to go to the international market," Campanella said.
Campanella is also a veteran of the U.S. television business, and has directed episodes of Fox's "House" and NBC's "Law & Order: SVU." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
