- Story Text: Pakistan army set up field medical camps in the southwest Baluchistan province on Thursday (September 26) to treat survivors of a powerful earthquake.
Tuesday's earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has killed 327 people and made thousands homeless.
Nearly 1,000 Pakistan army troops have intensified rescue and relief operations in the worst earthquake affected areas, including Awaran district.
The army said 174 wounded persons have been evacuated so far from different areas of Awaran.
It said 7,000 kg of food items, 1,000 kg medicine and 200 tents have been distributed among the survivors. Cooked food is also being provided to homeless people in Awaran.
A field medical facility comprising 21 doctors and 50 para-medics is providing medical treatment to the injured in Khuzdar and Awaran.
The army airlifted hundreds of soldiers to help with the aftermath of the worst earthquake in the South Asian country since 2005, when about 75,000 people were killed in the country's north.
Baluchistan is a huge earthquake-prone province of deserts and rugged mountains, and tremors were felt across South Asia.
The quake destroyed houses and cut communications with the worst affected district of Awaran and was so powerful, it caused a small island to emerge from the Arabian Sea, just off the Pakistani coast.
Awaran has a population of about 200,000.
Rescue teams found it hard to reach the remote location quickly, and some officials said the death toll was likely to rise as emergency workers fanned further into the mountains to assess the damage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
