- Story Text: It's not every day that the people of the small village of Santa Cruz Cabralia in northern Brazil can enjoy the buzz of having famous neighbours.
But for the coming weeks, they will regularly be seeing the stars of the Germany World Cup team around their neighbourhood as the soccer players have set up their World Cup base in the nearby Santo Andre.
They say they want to be as welcoming to the visitors as possible.
"Germany have come here and we welcome them," soccer coach Aube Ciove said on Wednesday (June 11). "We are having a party for Germany here during the World Cup. Brazil to win."
The local schoolchildren have been so excited about the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday (June 12), that the school organised a small soccer tournament for them.
It is an opportunity for the children to behave like their soccer stars - scoring goals and just generally having fun with the ball.
"This is a project for the World Cup because we have received Germany in our city," said school coordinator Charlene. "We decided to do this project and we decided today to hold a day of sports. It's an honour to have Germany here in our Brazil."
Germany are staying at a custom-built complex called "Campo Bahia" which consists of 65 rooms. It is expected to become a sports and nature resort after the World Cup.
Germany, who are bidding for their fourth World Cup title and their first international trophy since 1996, will begin their tournament with a Group G match against Portugal in Salvador on June 16.
They will also play Ghana and United States in the group stage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
