The day begins with morning calisthenics, followed by a hearty breakfast. Then come lessons about science and history, outdoor sports and field activities, and music and art classes. These are the joys of a three-week Jordanian summer camp near Naor for Palestinian orphan boys drawn from the poorest families of refugee camps. The YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association), in association with the United Nations agency, has organised this summer experience for twelve years, and its success is enhanced by regular follow-up sessions in the boys' home camps by trained youth workers and teachers. The theory -- which is proving a success in practice--is that the boys will become more valuable members of society by integrating themselves into a peaceful social and educational environment. After the horrors of war and displacement, the youngsters' twenty-one days of camping and scouting bring sense of normalcy to their lives. YMCA Director Alexander Ghammachi said that the boys receive their clothing and all equipment--much of it donated--without cost for their three-week stay at the summer camp.
