- Story Text: Russia opened the doors of the notorious Chernokozovo
detention camp in northern Chechnya after weeks of human
rights abuse allegations which have been repeatedly denied by
Moscow.
The Chernokozovo detention camp has been the centre
of allegations of torture and death by international human
rights groups and Chechen refugees.
Russia has set up the centre as a place to detain and
filter out Chechen rebel fighters from the hundreds of
thousands of civilians and refugees fleeing five-months of
fighting in Chechnya.
But refugees have said that Russian authorities have
indiscriminately detained, beaten, and tortured hundreds of
refugees.
The international Human Rights Watch group which has
monitors just outside of Chechnya says it is convinced that
reports of various abuse, torture, and murders in the camp are
true.
But Russia has denied the allegations and says it will
investigate reports of abuse.
Russian leaders have repeatedly said that the greatest
human rights abuses in the region were committed by groups
of armed bandits and terrorists who could moved freely and
held bases in the breakaway region before the crackdown.
