- Story Text: Actor Sean Connery has lent his support to the campaign
by the Scottish National Party (SNP) for an independent Scottish
parliament.
Connery arrived at the Edinburgh international
conference centre on Monday (April 26) to deliver a speech to
500 supporters of Scottish devolution. He was accompanied by
the leader of the SNP Alex Salmond, and Scottish MEP, Winnie Ewing.
Long a supporter of an independent Scotland, Connery said
a new Scottish Assembly must succeed.
"We are about to have our own parliament; if it is to
succeed it has to be democratic and all of the voices of all
of the parties must be heard. We have waited nearly three
hundred years; my hope is that it will evolve with dignity and
integrity and that it will truly reflect the new voice of
Scotland. If I was asked who do you think will win this
election, my answer would be, hopefully, Scotland ", the
former Bond actor said.
Connery donates 40,000 pounds a year to the funds of the
Scottish National Party, but denied that his rapturously
received speech had been written by them.
The actor, who lives abroad for tax reasons, arrived in
Scotland a few days earlier to promote his new film "Entrapment".
