Philippines presidential hopeful Mrs Corazon (Cory) Aquino took her electoral campaign to Tuguegarao, Northern Luzon, on January 7, deep into territory considered the stronghold of Defence Minister Juan Ponce Enrile. Mrs Aquino expressed surprise that President Ferdinand Marcos had labelled her a "communist". Marcos, campaigning for re-election in the February 8 poll, said at a rally on January 6 that among Mrs Aquino's "communist" backers were the militant May First Labour Movement and a social action group founded by Mrs Aquino's brother-in-law, "Butz" Aquino, and former Senator Lorenzo Tanada. Although she denied that she is a communist, Mrs Aquino urged communist not to boycott next month's presidential election, saying it might be the last chance for peaceful change of government. Mrs Aquino and vice-presidential candidate Salvador Laurel were making their second trip into the region that Marcos, in power for the last 20 years, calls his "solid North".
