    Hundreds of people, mostly third world immigrants, are camping in tents in different parts of Paris after being evicted from their lodgings.

    Eight families and their 28 children have set up camp outside the Sacre Coeur, one of Paris' most well-known tourist attractions.

    Sixteen more families are living outside the town hall in the 19th arrondissment and in the Place de la Reunion, three hundred people, half of them children have been camping since May 2.

    Many of the families say they have been moved several times and have nowhere else to go.

    According to a spokesman for the Committee for the Homeless, Maurice Momo, Paris' right-wing Mayor Jacques Chirac's programme to improve the city's image, by renovating old buildings and building new ones, has led to higher rents and more squatters.Momo believes that Chirac is determined to drive immigrants, especially Africans, and the poor out into the suburbs and create a city for the rich.

    The families say that they will carry on with their sit-ins until affordable permanent housing is found, preferably near their workplaces.

    City officials say the families are being too demanding and should accept lodgings outside the city as this is all that is now available.
