- Story Text: The French government launched a nationwide campaign against atmospheric pollution on Tuesday (24 February). Thousands of motorists across France had their cars stopped and checked by Environment Ministry official and police.
In the Paris area alone, hundreds of drivers pulled their cars off the road so experts could establish if their vehicles conformed to new regulations guarding against the excessive emission of carbon monoxide fumes.
Carbon monoxide is a major polluter of the atmosphere. The vehicle exhausts contain doses of load and are responsible for the heavy smog belts over cities, scientists claim.
In France, the groundswell of public opinion for government action on pollution has been mobilised to the point where the Touring Club de France, a major pro-motoring lobby, is banking the anti-pollution campaign.
While motorists have suffered some inconvenience, the majority have accepted the situation. And, if their cars pass the test, each driver receives a certificates of a clearance.
The build up to government action was led by the Association for the Prevention of Atmospheric Pollution.
