  • Story Text: Zambian Health Authorities are pressing on with their nationwide vaccination campaign, which has already had considerable effect in cutting drastically the number of deaths resulting from measles, smallpox and tuberculosis.

    Now a new campaign to eradicate measles in Lusaka has started. Children from townships on the outskirts of the city are being immunised against the killer disease. In the past about 20 per cent of children under five had died of measles even though they were admitted to hospital.

    Medical teams will in future be visiting these areas weekly to check on the health of the children.

    In Livingstone, too, a vigorous campaign has been started as part of the smallpox eradication programme. The entire population in the southern province will be treated against smallpox, and in addition all children under 15 will be treated against tuberculosis.

    The Ministry of Health has organised mass vaccination campaigns in the country for the past few years. In 1963 there were 1,800 cases of smallpox reported, with 200 deaths. But by 1965 the figure had been drastically reduced to 528 cases reported, with 59 deaths.

    The vaccination against tuberculosis takes the form of a painless injection in the upper arm.
