- Story Text: Twelve thousand people staged a march in La Louviere, Belgium, today (Monday), in support of their demands for the economic reinvigoration of the area.
The marchers, many of them carrying banners, claimed that the region was in a state of economic decline, and that the employment position, already grave, would get worse.
A leaflet issued by the organisers claimed that during the past ten years, 20,000 jobs - representing a quarter of the active population - had been lost, and that more than 60 firms had closed.
The leaflets also drew attention to the marchers' fears of more jobs at stake under the threatened closure of three of the four remaining coal mines in the area.
