- Story Text: Campaigning has continued in the Dominican Republic for Saturday's (16th May) Presidential elections with the current President, Joaquin Balaguer, receiving vociferous support during rallies in Santo Domingo.
During the past week campaigning for the five presidential candidates has been particularly vigorous in the capital, with several incidents resulting in the death of at least 14 people. With the elections only a day away little of the public enthusiasm had ebbed but rallies were more orderly as guards were posted at some of the likely trouble spots.
Crowds of supporters of President Balaguer are keeping a vigil outside his palace and have given him enthusiastic send-offs to his rallies. A clear favourite to win re-election for another four-year period, the 62-year-old President faces widespread accusations of giving the armed forces total freedom to deal with government opponents.
A large-scale voting abstention by followers of former President Juan Bosch, on the grounds that free voting will be impossible, in unlikely to affect the result. Opponents of President Balaguer fear his re-election could lead to further political repression and a defacto dictatorship.
