- Story Text: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opened this week's elections to the state legislative assemblies by waging a vigorous campaign for her party's candidates in the Delhi area on Sunday (March 5).
In a series of political rallies held in various parts of the city, Mrs. Gandhi called upon the people of Delhi to demonstrate their confidence in her government by voting for candidates of the Ruling Congress Party.
The vote in Delhi is considered significant in the present elections. Last year the people of Delhi backed Mrs. Gandhi in the parliamentary elections. But shortly thereafter, they voted the opposition Jan Singh Party into office in the city's municipal elections. In all some 12,000 candidates are competing for 2,694 assembly seats in 16 states and two union territories, including Delhi.
