- Story Text: Dr. Hector Campora, who stood down from Argentina's Presidency last week, visited General Jaun Peron on Thursday (19th July) as rumours circulated that the General's health was deteriorating.
Newsmen and photographers were waiting outside General Peron's home in Buenos Aires as Dr. Campora arrived. He resigned from the Presidency after only 7 weeks in office to make way for General Peron's return to power.
The Presidency is now provisionally in the hands of Dr. Raul Lastiri, President of the Lower House of Congress.
On Friday (20th July), the Government announced that Presidential elections will be held on September 23rd. At the same time Dr. Lastiri announced that General Peron was in an excellent state of health.
As the announcements were made, renewed violence was reported in several urban centres, including the capital. Three people were injured by gunmen and a Peronist Parliamentary deputy narrowly escaped death. Police said the shootings came before the election announcement.
General Peron - who is now 77 - returned to Argentina in June after more than 17 years in exile. He ruled Argentina for 9 years until he was ousted by a military coup in 1956.
