- Story Text: A United States (U.S.) armoured unit began to set up camp at an abandoned airfield in the sensitive Posavino corridor on Monday (January 1) as the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Bosnia gathered force.
The armoured unit passed into the corridor after crossing into Bosnia from Croatia via the new pontoon bridge over the Sava River.
The Posavina corridor is a thin strip of territory linking Serbe-held chunks of land in eastern and northestern Bosnia.
U.S. army captain James Love said his squadron would make its initial base at the abandoned Zabar Bara airfield, where it would likely remain for one week until other U.S. squadrons can join it.
But the U.S. soldiers and their Bradley armoured fighting vehicles have not yet received final orders so they do not know where they will be deployed next.
It is likely that the squadrons will be assigned to patrol the sensitive corridor.
A column of U.S. troops in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)-led Implementation Force (IFOR) rumbled into Bosnia through the corridor near Loncari on Monday.
