- Story Text: - INTRO: A German artist has displayed posters featuring her 66-year-old mother in underwear in a bid to support her anti-ageism campaign.
The artist Melanie Manchot launched her poster campaign designed to force people to confront "ageism" outside London's South Kensington underground station on Thursday (January 15).
Five 6 by 3 meter (20 by 10 feet) billboard posters showed her 66 year-old mother wearing only underwear.
Manchot, who lives with her partner and baby daughter in south east London's Waterloo, said the images were quite shocking to London's commuters at first but that most took a second look.
She said her campaign was aimed at making people realise how artificial and stereotypical images of young, slim models were, adding that the popular perception of women was that they were forever young and beautiful.
She said that once women reached a certain age they were invisible to others and that society was prejudiced against older people.
Reactions from passer-bys were mixed. One woman said she liked the poster because of its daring message. A man said it taught people to love themselves when they grew older. But one passer-by said he did not think it was quite right to move away from young models.
Miss Manchot has been studying the representation of women through her art for several years and said she was driven to this public display by the constant negative imagery of older people.
