- Story Text: Intensive security preparations were continuing at Frankfurt and other West German airports on Tuesday (January 8th) after reports that an Arab guerrilla group had entered the country with ground to air missiles.
Security was on three levels. There were normal airport security forces. There were reinforced by the local police, who kept the surrounding area under strict surveillance, and by the Frontier Police who were heavily armed and used armoured cars. The armoured vehicles were guarding specific airliners, but the police refused to say which ones. There were also extra thorough checks on passengers and their luggage.
A full alert was called after someone had telephoned the airport police and said in broken German that a group of six Arabs planned a rocket attack on an airliner.
Repeated reports that some Sam 7 anti-aircraft missiles are somewhere in Europe and in 'unofficial hands' has led to massive security operations. Extra armed forces have been crafted in at airports in London, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris. The Italian government has promised to tighten up its 'already efficient' security.
