Hundreds of Kurds fighting for independence from Turkey are training in a camp in Lebanon's Bekaa valley, near Syria.
The recruits to the communist Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) include women, and children as young as 12. PKK officers said up to 6,000 guerrillas are trained there every year, before crossing the Iraqi and Syrian borders into Turkey to attack government targets.
The PKK's guerrilla war in southeast Turkey has led to about 3,000 deaths since 1984.
PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan on Sunday (March 24) denounced an Iraqi Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), as a Turkish agent, because a KDP representative met Ankara officials this month to seek aid for its fight against Baghdad. Ocalan said it was possible the two groups would clash.
There are about 10 million Kurds in Turkey, five million in Iran, three-and-a-half million in Iraq and 600,000 in Syria.
