- Story Text: Political parties in the island state of Singapore are stepping up their campaigns for a general election next Saturday in which the big question is not whether there will be a change of government, but whether opposition parties can get anyone into parliament at all.
Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's People's Action Party -- the P.A.P. -- has been firmly in power since 1959 and without parliamentary opposition since 1965. It announced last week that it would seek a new mandate before the expiry of its current term next April.
No political observers doubt that the P.A.P., with its strong record of achievement and its formidable political machinery, will be returned to power. But they say, if the main opposition parties can find a measure of unity they could win some of the 65 seats at stake.
